JSS Barristers in the Community

JSS Barristers works very hard for its clients. Outside of the direct practice of law, we are also a diverse group of people who, as a firm and individually, are very active in our community. We take the time to give back to both the legal profession and the community at large.

JSS Barristers is proud to have its lawyers participate in such organizations as the Calgary Bar Association, Canadian Club of Calgary, Canadian Bar Association, American Association for Justice, Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association, The Advocate's Society, and other professional organizations.

In addition, JSS Barristers lawyers also are very involved in other charitable and other pursuits, which, we hope, help to enrich the community in which we live.

Some highlights of what we do when we're not in our offices are showcased below.

The JSS Barristers Advo-cats recently showcased their musical talents and fundraising abilities for two great charitable causes.

Between Bands in support of Between Friends Club

This event was a fundraiser for the Between Friends Club charity held at Flames Central on November 15, 2012, where the JSS Barristers Advo-Cats were lucky enough to share the stage with long-time local favourites, bORDERLINE. The event was a great success that saw lots of supporters come out and cheer on the bands as they duelled away on stage together in over 3 hours of non-stop music, hosted by Tony Tighe! Over $40,000.00 was raised at this event.

ZSA Legal Recruitment Battle of the Bar Bands in support of Alberta Lawyer's ASSIST

This event was the ZSA sponsored Battle of the Bar Bands, a fundraiser in support of Alberta Lawyer's ASSIST. The JSS Barristers Advo-Cats left everything on the stage and were lucky enough to be crowned the victors by the Judges of this year's Battle of the Bar Bands; they also won awards for the most funds raised and most corporate sponsors.

Make sure to keep your eyes and ears tuned for the JSS Barristers Advo-Cats next big show!

JSS BARRISTERS GROWS (HAIR)

JSS BARRISTERS GROWS (HAIR)

JSS Barristers is supporting men’s health this Movember, and has registered a team of lawyers who are growing moustaches to raise money for men’s health awareness.

1 in 7 men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime, and early detection is the best defence. Movember aims to increase early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.

Our Team is proud to become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words, they hope to raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

“My Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer when he turned 65. Thanks to a timely doctors check-up he caught it early and is now fully recovered.” Geoff Boddy – Associate

Hopefully, we can all help shed some more light on the importance of healthy lifestyle and regular check-ups! Please support our Movember Team, and men’s health everywhere, by donating to Team JSS Barristers:

JSS Barristers Advo-Cats and the March of Dimes Rock for Dimes, February 2012

JSS Barristers Advo-Cats

The JSS Barristers Advo-Cats are the firm's rock band, comprised of Oliver Ho as lead vocalist, Darren J. Reed on rhythm guitar, backup and lead vocals (and the tambourine, occasionally), Simon McCleary as lead guitarist, Glenn Solomon, Q.C. on drums and Geoffrey Boddy on bass guitar.

The Advo-Cats participated in the March of Dimes Rock for Dimes Battle of the Corporate Bands charity fundraiser which was held at Flames Central in Calgary on February 4, 2012.

The band is truly touched and humbled by the encouragement and help that they received. An ambitious fundraising goal of $25,000.00 was set, and substantially surpassed. With the help of the community they raised over $36,000.00 for March of Dimes and its programs in Calgary. We won the "Battle" and the trophy for "Most Funds Raised" and the "Battle" for "Fan Favourite Band". This Rock for Dimes event was the most financially successful one ever held anywhere in Canada, and raised more funds than any band in any Rock for Dimes event ever held anywhere in Canada! They could not have done any of this without the kind and generous backing of our supporters!

JSS Barristers and the Children's Wish Foundation

Children's Wish Foundation

JSS Barristers is proud to support two of its partners, Bryan C. Duguid and Matthew J. Epp who are actively involved with the Children's Wish foundation, and have been for some time.

As part of its involvement with The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada, JSS Barristers has donated significant pro bono effort and legal services in connection with a dispute and the ultimate successful recovery of estate funds that were bequeathed to the Foundation.

Established in 1984, Children's Wish is a national non-profit organization dedicated to fulfilling a favourite wish for children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses. Since its inception, Children's Wish has granted more than 18,000 wishes for children and their families and fulfills approximately 1000 wishes annually -- granting nearly three wishes everyday -- each being an individual adventure, carefully structured to meet the needs of that particular child. The foundation has never refused a wish to an eligible child.

Children's Wish, a registered national charity with chapters in every province and territory, relies on the generosity of its donors and volunteers to make certain that no wish is refused. Children's Wish has established itself as one of the most recognized registered charities in Canada and the most recognized organization when it comes to granting wishes for children diagnosed with life threatening illnesses.

Bryan C. Duguid is the Vice-Chair and a member of the Advisory Board of The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada (Alberta and N.W.T Chapter); for the last several years, Matthew J. Epp has chaired the Gala Committee for the Children's Wish Foundation. The annual gala is the largest fundraiser for this charitable organization which works with the families of ill children in order to grant these children their "wish". Mr. Epp is also a member of the Advisory Board.
