JSS Barristers works very hard for its clients. Outside of the direct practice of law, we are also a diverse group of people who, as a firm and individually, are very active in our community. We take the time to give back to both the legal profession and the community at large.
JSS Barristers is proud to have its lawyers participate in such organizations as the Calgary Bar Association, Canadian Club of Calgary, Canadian Bar Association, American Association for Justice, Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association, The Advocate's Society, and other professional organizations.
In addition, JSS Barristers lawyers also are very involved in other charitable and other pursuits, which, we hope, help to enrich the community in which we live.
Some highlights of what we do when we're not in our offices are showcased below.
The recently performed at the gala dinner for the Canadian Bar Association's Alberta Law Conference, held in Calgary January 31, 2014. The 'Cats rocked out, and a great time was had by all attending the "Great Gatsby" themed event.
The Calgary Zoo's wondrous winter attraction featuring over 1.5 million lights. Since the Zoo was devastated by this summer's flood, we have been supporting the Zoo with Board participation, advice, donations and fundraising. We are thrilled to further meaningfully support the Zoo as the ZooLights Title Sponsor as the Zoo re-opens to the public - it is an amazing achievement for the Zoo and a cause for community celebration.
For the Seventh year in a row, members of the JSS Barristers family participated in the 21st annual Bowl for Kids Charity event that raises money in Support of Big Brothers / Big Sisters of Calgary and Area.
Organized by the Stampede City Progress Club, and held at Chinook Bowladrome in March/April, the Bowl for Kids event raises over $250,000 annually.
JSS Barristers participates in the event both as a lane sponsor and sends twenty of their "best" bowlers for the cause.
JSS Barristers is proud to support one of its partners, Matthew J. Epp who is actively involved with the Children's Wish Foundation, as part of the firm's ongoing and historic involvement with the Foundation.
For instance, JSS Barristers donated significant pro bono effort and legal services in connection with a dispute and the ultimate successful recovery of estate funds that were bequeathed to the Foundation.
Established in 1984, Children's Wish is a national non-profit organization dedicated to fulfilling a favourite wish for children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses. Since its inception, Children's Wish has granted more than 18,000 wishes for children and their families and fulfills approximately 1000 wishes annually -- granting nearly three wishes everyday -- each being an individual adventure, carefully structured to meet the needs of that particular child. The foundation has never refused a wish to an eligible child.
Children's Wish, a registered national charity with chapters in every province and territory, relies on the generosity of its donors and volunteers to make certain that no wish is refused. Children's Wish has established itself as one of the most recognized registered charities in Canada and the most recognized organization when it comes to granting wishes for children diagnosed with life threatening illnesses.
Matthew J. Epp is currently a member of the Advisory Board of The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada (Alberta and N.W.T Chapter); after chairing the Gala Committee for the Children's Wish Foundation. The annual gala is the largest fundraiser for this charitable organization which works with the families of ill children in order to grant these children their "wish".
JSS Barristers is proud to give back to the community through not only its lawyers and staff supporting community activities and chairties through donating their time, but also through donating funds to charitable organizations.
