Matthew was born and raised in Calgary. He graduated from the University of Calgary with a bachelor’s degree in political science and then obtained his law degree from the University of Alberta. He has been practicing civil litigation for 20 years, including several years spent as a prosecutor at the Alberta Securities Commission. He is a partner at JSS Barristers.
Matthew regularly defends professionals in the legal, investment and real estate industries, both in civil proceedings and in front of industry tribunals, including the Law Society of Alberta, the Mutual Fund Dealers Association (MFDA), Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC), the Alberta Securities Commission and the Real Estate Council of Alberta.
With experience in many areas of litigation, Matthew is regularly called on by large corporations to act as lead counsel on complex securities litigation, shareholder’s disputes and general commercial disputes.
Matthew has recently been involved in significant arbitral proceedings, including disputes in the electricity industry relating to Power Purchase Arrangements, real estate development and general corporate/commercial matters.
Defending class action proceedings has become a part of Matthew’s practice where he has been called on to defend real estate developers and investment professionals in large, complex class actions.
Matthew has received regular recognition from his peers as a Leading Practitioner in Securities Litigation and has also been recognized by Benchmark Litigation as a Litigation Star for his general litigation skills.
Matthew is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, and the Calgary Bar Association.
Matthew is married and has one child. He is an avid golfer and also enjoys squash, hockey and skiing in his spare time.
