Matt was born and raised in Calgary. He graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science in 1991 having focused his course work on U.S. politics and strategic studies. Matt graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta in Edmonton in 1995 and commenced his articles with one of Edmonton’s oldest and most respected firms. Subsequent to that he accepted a position in Calgary with a large multi-national firm where he continued to practice exclusively in the area of civil litigation.

Most recently, Matt spent 3 ½ years with the Alberta Securities Commission where he prosecuted offences under Alberta’s Securities Act. During this period, Matt argued a precedent setting case before Alberta’s Court of Appeal involving the right to cross examine a securities investigator and also successfully prosecuted one of the largest market manipulation cases ever heard in Canada.

Matt has extensive experience in all areas of civil litigation with a particular emphasis on securities litigation and professional negligence. He has appeared before all levels of court in Alberta and the Supreme Court of British Columbia. He appears regularly before the Alberta Securities Commission with respect to matters involving Alberta’s Securities Act and also represents investment advisors in disciplinary proceedings.

In 2011 Matt received a Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory peer review rating as a Leading Practitioner in Securities Litigation.

Matt has presented at various seminars relating to jury trials, freedom of information, and the litigation process. He has been a guest lecturer at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Engineering where he instructed graduate students on issues relating to litigation and professional negligence. For several years he instructed young lawyers at the Bar Admission course on the issues of practice management and professional ethics.

Matt is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, and the Calgary Bar Association.

Matt is married and has one child. He is an avid golfer and also enjoys squash, hockey and skiing in his spare time.
