Born and raised in Calgary, Oliver is also a graduate of the University of Calgary. Oliver concurrently completed his Bachelors of Laws and Bachelors of Arts; he was conferred both degrees in 2002.

Oliver served four years as an elected member of the Senate of the University of Calgary, and was a member of the selection committee for the first Dean of the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. He has also been an interviewer for applicants to the University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine. Oliver is also an active member of the Youth Singers of Calgary Development Foundation.

Having competed for the University of Calgary as a member of the Varsity Track & Field Team, Oliver has continued to fulfill his interest in athletics by completing two marathons. Oliver is also an accomplished musician having been recognized in national and international competitions. Oliver's groups have released a number of albums and have performed concert tours in North America, South America, the Caribbean, Australia, Europe, Japan and China.

As a choral director with the Youth Singers of Calgary, Oliver has lead groups of junior high students to California on multiple occasions. Oliver continues to teach and mentor young performers as the Assistant Director of the Jr. Hi Division and as a Vocal Coach for the Sr. Hi Division.

Oliver is a volunteer judge and evaluator for the CPLED articling program, has been a volunteer judge for various University of Calgary Faculty of Law moot teams, and has volunteered as a coach for the St. Francis and Bowness High School Debate Teams. Oliver has also volunteered as a judge for the Canadian Bar Association Law Day, and has been a sessional instructor at the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary.

Oliver articled with a large national firm and continued to work for that firm as an associate until November 2004 when he joined Jensen Shawa Solomon Duguid Hawkes LLP. During his years in practice, Oliver has had the opportunity to defend physicians but now advances professional negligence claims. In addition to professional negligence, significant portions of Oliver's practice includes corporate and commercial litigation, and administrative law including securities hearings. Oliver has appeared before all levels of Court in Alberta, and before the Supreme Court of British Columbia.
