Gavin received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology (Zoology) from the University of Calgary in 1997. He then attended the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary, graduating in 2001. Upon graduation, Gavin clerked at the Court of Appeal and the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta. Following his clerkship, Gavin completed his articles at the Calgary offices of a large national law firm, practicing in securities and regulatory matters. He was called to the Alberta Bar in 2002. Gavin joined JSS Barristers in 2003 and became a Partner in 2010.
Gavin's practice includes corporate litigation, commercial litigation, oil and gas litigation, professional negligence and discipline and class actions. He also defends parties in matters involving both the Alberta Securities Commission and IIROC. In addition, he devotes a portion of his practice to representing plaintiffs on serious personal injury cases.
Gavin's recent experience includes representing a large multi-national energy corporation in a complex arbitration involving environmental remediation obligations. Gavin has also recently represented and continues to represent individual shareholders in several options backdating claims against directors and officers of public companies. He is also currently counsel to several defendant professionals in ongoing mortgage fraud cases.
In his spare time, Gavin enjoys hiking and skiing and chasing after his young son. Gavin also edits and compiles the JSS Barristers Rules Newsletter, a free quarterly publication that addresses recent cases which consider the Alberta Rules of Court.
