Director of Business and Operations

JSS Barristers is seeking a Director of Business and Operations (DBO) to complement our busy litigation law firm and fill this newly-created role. We are looking for someone with the education, experience, and expertise to add value to our management team. The DBO will have a general understanding of law firm management, and will serve within our committee structure. He/she will have the opportunity to take part in strategic planning, executing and generally contributing to firm operations.

Key Objectives

The DBO will be a communications specialist and a problem solver. He/she will provide support to the managing director and ensure all staff and lawyers are being supported. The DBO will champion and improve internal communications, efficiency, productivity, marketing, business development, client retention and, ultimately, increased revenue.


The DBO will be take part in all aspects of firm operations, including human resources management, committee membership, facilities management, accounting, firm technology and project management. The DBO may be involved with

  • interviewing and onboarding staff and lawyers
  • data management
  • payroll
  • the Health and Safety Committee
  • the Digital Media Strategy Committee including ongoing development and improvement of the overall digital media strategy for the firm
  • marketing projects
  • liaising with the landlord
  • maintaining vendor contracts
  • leasehold improvements
  • employee safety
  • regular reviewing of vendor costs, including collecting, analyzing, and summarizing operational data and trends
  • inventory control
  • renovations
  • infrastructure changes
  • employee engagement
  • promoting process improvement
  • strategic planning, including monitoring firm operations, providing input and suggestions for increased revenue and cost cutting

Key Relationships

The DBO will report to the Managing Director, and will work closely with lawyers, staff and vendors.

Formal Education and Experience

The Director of Business and Operations will have a Master of Business Administration or a Bachelor of Commerce degree, and may also have experience in the following areas:

  • business management
  • finance
  • marketing
  • legal accounting
  • website and social media training
  • customer service
  • project management
  • facilities management
  • inventory control
